Born in Kentish Town, London in 1809, the young Bartlett was apprenticed to John Britton (1771-1857). He became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation, travelling not just throughout Britain, but to the Americas in 1839-42.
In the mid/late 1840s he travelled extensively in the Balkans and Middle East. He died of fever on board ship returning from his last trip to Israel in 1854.
