Born in Kentish Town, London on 1809, the young Bartlett was
apprenticed to John Britton (1771-1857).
He became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation,
travelling not just throughout Britain,
but to the Americas in 1839-42.
In the mid–late 1840s he travelled extensively in the Balkans and Middle East.
He died of fever on board ship returning from his last trip to Israel in 1854.
