Sketches in Belgium and Germany
Drawn on stone by Louis Haghe

Published by Henry Graves & Co., London (1845)

Original 175+-year-old stone lithographs— two tone, some heightened with white
Sheet size: 14.5 x 23.25 inches (some exceptions noted)

The most famous early Victorian firm of lithographic printing was created by William Day (1797-1845) and Louis Haghe (1806-1895) in London in 1829. Throughout their initial years, Day and Haghe printed lithographs dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as hunting scenes, topographical views and genre depictions. Their lithographs were so meticulously conceived and technically advanced that in 1838, Day and Haghe were appointed 'Lithographers to the Queen.' After William's death in 1845, the firm became known as 'Day & Son' and in the mid-Victorian era it led the way as a pioneer of the recently developed medium of the lithograph printed in colours.

Due to the age and type of paper used, most of the lithographs have at least some foxing (spotting).
The foxing is mainly in the margins, but several have extensive foxing which extends into the image area.
Some also have small nicks on the outer edges of the paper or corner wear not affecting the image area.
