"Missale Festivum" (1649)
handwritten on parchment
from an unknown Spanish monastery
Size: varies, but approx. 15½ x 22½ inches
These are original parchment pages from a hymnal used in a Catholic church in Spain. It was written by
"Frater Nicolaus Parets" who finished the work on May 31, 1649.
Parchment has a light whiter side, which was the inside of the animal skin. The outside is yellower and darker.
Because parchment was expensive, hymnals were made large enough so one copy could be seen by a large
group of people.
These parchments are more than 350 years old, so naturally they do show some signs of wear and age - part of
their great charm. The hymns
are written on both sides of the parchment. We have chosen to show just
one side in the thumbnails below,
the more decorative of the 2 sides. Many people tell us they have "framed"
these in a double sided frame so that
both sides may be enjoyed.
