Specimens of Ancient Furniture Drawn from Existing authorities

by Henry Shaw
(1836, London, Wm. Pickering, publisher)

Original engravings over 185 years old

Sheet size: approx. 8 5/8 x 11 inches (some plates foxed, mainly outside of image)

English interest in medieval and Gothic art, architecture and ornamentation in the early nineteenth century owed a large debt to Henry Shaw (1800-1873). Both an architectural artist and an antiquary, Henry Shaw combined his artistic gifts with meticulous and scholarly research which made his publications among the finest of the times. Such great lithographic and engraved works as Illuminated Ornaments (1833), Specimens of Ancient Furniture (1836) and The Art of Illumination (1866) are from his hand. Henry Shaw's important art helped to develop an appreciation and aided in the preservation of many fine ancient buildings.
